If the carpet is really not usable, then it might be recyclable. Some kinds of carpets can be recycled into new carpet, other kinds can be used for other purposes - such as soaking up sludge at a petroleum refinery. This website lists carpet recycling facilities around the country: http://www.carpetrecovery.org/waste.php For the Portland Metro area, the Metro Find a Recycler website lists recyclers by material and location:
